About, Edmond

   writer and journalist
Born in Dieuze, Edmond About wrote essays about the theater before he became recognized for a collection of short stories (Les Mariages de Paris, 1856; Les Mariages de province, 1868); inspired by depictions of contemporary mores described by honoré de Balzac in his works. Evoking imaginary situations, often suggested by scientific progress (Le Roi des montaignes, 1857; L'Homme à l'oreille cassé, 1862), About's writings are lively and bright accounts. A political journalist, known for his clear and incisive style, he was outspoken in his anticlerical views. Edmond About was elected to the Académie Française in 1884.
